Summer 2017 Speed School was a success enrolling 55 young athletes representing 11 schools from across central Illinois.  Teens got faster, stronger, and more fit as Project Athlete coaches lead them through tough training.  Athletic assessment data was tracked for most of the athletes and proved athletic improvement.  Our young athletes received reprieve with water balloons, snacks, guest speakers, and games.  It was a great summer and we look forward to seeing our summer program athletes at Project Athletes sessions at their schools, the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, and the Stephens Family YMCA this Fall!

Garth Brooks and the U of I Football Team Work With Project Athletes Participants

CHAMPAIGN- PROJECT ATHLETES was honored to partner with the Garth Brook's Foundation, ProCamps, and Fighting Illini Football to put on a special private event for Project Athletes participants and other young athletes in the Champaign-Urbana community Saturday April 29, 2017.

Garth Brooks' tour stopped in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois April 28-30, 2017 for a string of packed shows but he didn't leave town without giving back to the C-U community.  The Garth Brooks Foundation partners with ProCamps to host private day camps for youth 8-14 years old in some of the communities Brooks visits on tour.  The camps target underserved and at-risk youth though, other youth were able to participate, as well.

PROJECT ATHLETES worked tirelessly with ProCamps, the Stephens Family Champaign County YMCA, and Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club to reach out to youth across central Illinois about the private camp. However, registration was not easy.  Due to the privacy of the event, no promotion, social media posting, nor advertising of the event was allowed in advance and PROJECT ATHLETES was specifically prohibited from telling anyone the Garth Brooks Foundation was involved nor that Garth Brooks himself would be at the camp working with the kids.

PROJECT ATHLETES helped register 140 participants surpassing ProCamps' goal of 125. Participants at the camp represented each of PROJECT ATHLETES six operating sites.

Participants worked with University of Illinois Fighting Illini Football coaches and football players running through skills stations, playing games, and talking in small focus groups.  Garth Brooks arrived for the last hour, worked with the kids, and spoke with them about loving others and being a good person.

It was an incredible morning, opportunity, and generosity from Garth Brooks himself.

PROJECT ATHLETES OPENS TWO NEW LOCKER ROOMS JANUARY 2017

1/11/2017

CHAMPAIGN- PROJECT ATHLETES is expanding! PROJECT ATHLETES opens the Tiger Locker Room at Urbana Middle School in Urbana, Illinois and Jaguar Locker Room at Jefferson Middle School in Champaign, Illinois this month.

The expansion means more than 60 additional athletes will have access to safe after-school programing that gets them physically active, elite athletic training, mentors, academic coaching and encouragement, and a "team" atmosphere to be a part of whether or not they are a part of an organized school sports team.

PROJECT ATHLETES will now be operating at five sites impacting nearly 150 young athletes every week. Plans and a new partnership are also being explored to open the first PROJECT ATHLETE Locker Room at an elementary school.

January 2017 also launched the beginning of Session 2 for most of the PROJECT ATHLETE sites.
Participants who have been with us since Session 1 are showing improved speed and athleticism, losing weight, and gaining more self-confidence.  Locker Room site supervisors are also reporting grade and school attendance improvement for many participants while they were active in PROJECT ATHLETES during fall 2016 school semester when compared to spring 2016.

Session 2 will also bring in more mentors for students who will assist with homework, character development, and help foster positive guidance with their life choices.

Many exciting things are happening with PROJECT ATHLETES! If you know of anyone interested in being a part of our PROJECT ATHLETES coaching staff, please have them contact us!

Monetary donations are always needed to help the program grow and reach more young athletes. Donations can be made on this website by clicking the “donate” button at the bottom of the homepage.  In-Kind donations of athletic shoes, drinks, and snacks are always appreciated and needed as well.
